Postcard from Africa

Postcard from Namibia Tracie Thome

Namibia's landscapes were unlike anything I had ever seen before—vast, otherworldly, and utterly breathtaking. If you're planning a trip there, Sossusvlei and Deadvlei are must-visit destinations, where towering red dunes contrast starkly against the cracked white clay pans. But for a truly surreal experience, where the endless desert meets the crashing waves of the Atlantic, make sure to visit the Skeleton Coast.

One of my most cherished travel memories took place in the Sabi Sands of South Africa. As the sun dipped below the horizon during our evening game drive, we stumbled upon a magnificent young male lion, basking in the last golden rays of daylight. Our game ranger chose to simply observe him, allowing us to take in the serene, almost magical moment. Then, without warning, the lion let out a thunderous roar—so powerful it made our safari vehicle tremble. The sound echoed through the wilderness, a breathtaking display of his dominance. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, a moment of pure awe that served as a reminder of nature’s raw beauty and majesty. Truly unforgettable.
