CALD 40 Years Header 1

Erin Phillips

Lovely to meet you

I have been in and out of the industry since the 80's I have lived in Australia, Canada, Italy and of course NZ.

I have travelled to some great places but there is still a huge number of countries on my wish list.

There is nothing better than being able to help someone when they are going to a new place...recommend a hotel, restaurant or activity and then have them return to say how much they enjoyed it all.

My favourite holiday memories

  • Heron Island Erin Phillips
    Heron Island Erin Phillips

I have been lucky enough to stay at this amazing resort - part research and rescue centre - several times and have seen the turtles both laying their eggs and also the wee hatchlings emerging to the ocean.

It is such an honor to see.. the poor mum turtle struggles much like we do to get her eggs all delivered and then covered during the safety of the night time hours and then just heads back out to sea without a backward glance...

The wee turtles are surprisingly strong and as much as you want to aid their journey to the sea by smoothing the sand and removing twigs and other debris, the attending DOC style staff make sure there is no interference.

  • St John Reversing Falls
    St John Reversing Falls

Reversing Falls, St John, New Brunswick, Canada

This amazing place flouts the laws of physics with the power of the ocean tide on the Fundy Coast making the water in the falls literally flow back up the hill twice daily.

I will always remember my young sons looking on in total amazement as they tried to comprehend what they were looking at...

St John is a great little city with much to offer on a trip out to the eastern Canadian provinces.

  • Duomo, Florence, Italy
    Duomo Florence Italy Erin Phillips
Not only one of my most favourite cities in the world, but the Duomo in Florence is also one of my favourite buildings - it is just breathtaking, inside and out.

During my school years, back in the 7th Form (giving away my age a bit here) I took an Art History class. My teacher was very passionate about Italy and the Renaissance in general and passed on such a love of the Duomo that I did not realise I had, until I finally went there some 30 years later.

I must admit to being very emotional as I approached for the first time, even tearing up a little.

I would love to be able to tell my teacher how she still impacted my life, so many years later, and try to impart the same passion to my clients.

  • Hoi An, Vietnam

    Foodie Scooter Tour

    Hoi An, Vietnam

The best fun on 2 wheels!

This was a progressive dinner tour on the back of a scooter (with a back so really safe and secure) that started with cocktails and appetizer; then onto a main, then onto a desert and finally a street vendor for a 'food surprise'.

Racing through the already manic traffic in this beautiful city, through ally ways known only to the guides. All of the group I was with did this tour and it was well worth the money.

I have recommended it to a number of my clients who have come back to say it was one of the highlights of their time in Hoi An.

  • Monte Cassino Italy
    Monte Cassino Italy Erin Phillips
    Monte Cassino, Italy

Took a pilgrimage here to both the Railway Station, Commonwealth cemetery and the Monastery when living in Rome.

My Great-Uncle fought here during the war, so we took Poppies to place on the memorial at the railway station and then took a guided tour up to the Monastery.

It was almost the total opposite of what I was expecting. I had envisaged an austere building with little over the top decoration, to go with my impression of Monks living simply...

The reality is beautiful centuries old art, timber work and as the crypt was undamaged during the bombing, the mosaic ceiling and decoration is just breathtaking.

My travel passions

Food - Any time I can try some new food I am there... love to learn how to cook authentically so when you return home you can relive the place each time you make the meal.

History and Architecture - History just blows me away - and I can not get enough of it when I am travelling. I love to read up about a new place before I get there so I can really appreciate what I am experiencing ... or if you find a new wonder by accident, read up about it when I get home

People- I have made friends all over the place and they just add so much to your travel experience, now just to have the time and funds to go back and see them again... and add new ones!
