In 2023, I worked aboard a classic sailing yacht that sailed from Mallorca to Bodrum, then spent over a month exploring Turkey's stunning South Coast. Fresh mornings at the helm and anchoring in beautiful bays were the perfect start to each day. The mezes in villages like Bodrum were incredible, and a highlight was paragliding in Oludeniz, soaring above the Babadag Mountain and lagoon, with views of the landscape and even the boat I called home!
On my personal travels, I spent a week in vibrant Istanbul, eating my weight in Turkish breakfasts (menemen was my favorite), sipping strong coffee, and enjoying endless refills of Turkish tea. I explored the city's highlights on foot, took a ferry from Eminonu to Kadikoy, and bartered in the Grand Bazaar—what a lively, historic city!
I then spent a few weeks in Dalyan, exploring citrus and pomegranate orchards, hiking hills, and walking along the river. Turkey’s small villages offered some of the warmest hospitality, especially in Goreme, where I met a local and ended up with a free stay in a Cave Hotel—an upgrade from my hostel! I spent four unforgettable days experiencing the region, with ATV tours through the surreal landscape of Cappadocia, visiting the underground city of Kaymakli, and of course, the famous hot air balloons.
Despite the chilly weather (and a 13-day wait for clear skies), I finally had the chance to float over the fairy chimneys at sunrise. Seeing the volcanic formations and valleys from above was a surreal experience—Cappadocia’s landscapes are truly otherworldly.
Turkey's mix of natural beauty, rich history, and incredible people left me with memories I’ll never forget. I can’t wait to return!
