I first visited Italy in 2019, and though it was a short trip due to a prior illness, it left me craving more! I ticked off the iconic sights of Rome, including the Colosseum, Palatine Hill, and Stadio. While I didn’t get inside the Vatican, I made sure to enjoy some amazing pasta and gelato (pistachio, of course) in Vatican City.
I’ve since explored Florence, Naples, and cruised through the Messina Strait before spending over a month on Sicily, from Taormina and Syracuse to the quaint fishing village of Trapani. A highlight was driving up Mount Etna and joining an ATV tour around its volcanic craters.
One unforgettable experience was seeing Jimmy Sax perform live at the ancient Theatre of Taormina—an impromptu show that was totally worth it! I’ve also explored the Amalfi Coast, Capri, and Positano, where I spent many evenings ashore and afternoons at the beach. It’s easy to see why this region is so beloved.
A highlight of my time in Pompeii was, of course, the ruins, explored in the blistering August heat. And, when I sailed from Sarande, Albania to Taormina, Sicily, I couldn’t help but be amazed by the coastal views. Italy is a place I’ll definitely return to!
