Postcard from Dubai

Postcard from Dubai Olivia Whiteside Jenkins

While transiting through Dubai can be convenient, there are so many reasons why you should consider spending time in the city instead! I visited Dubai with my family in November 2023, and it is still one of my favourite destinations.

We ticked off an array of things, making our way up the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world and spending an afternoon in the desert riding 4x4 quad bikes, dune bashing and camel riding all before arriving at a desert camp to enjoy a falcon flying demonstration, starry sky, traditional dinner and cultural performances (a must-do!). Other days we spent relaxing at Jumeirah beach, discovering the Dubai Marina, exploring the largest mall in the world, visiting attractions like Ferrari World, Dubai Aquarium, Louvre Abu Dhabi, Motiongate Theme Park, The Grand Mosque, Miracle Garden, Aquaventure Waterpark and The Palm.

A stand-out was joining a local guide for a tour of Old Dubai. Old Dubai offers a glimpse into the city’s rich history and heritage, contrasting with its modern skyline. We boarded our Abra (traditional wooden boat) for a ride across Dubai Creek to the Spice and Gold Souk. The Spice Souk is a market filled with aromatic spices, herbs, and traditional medicinal products, while the Gold Souk is one of the largest gold markets in the world, where an array of jewellery and gold items can be found for a fraction of the price. We finished the day at the Heritage Village, which showcased traditional Emirati handicrafts, including pottery, textiles, and jewellery.
