In January 2024 I
embarked on a 14-night expedition cruise aboard Ponant's La Soleal in the
Southern Ocean. Departing from Dunedin, New Zealand, our itinerary included
The Snares, Enderby Island, Macquarie Island, Campbell Island, and Antipodes.
From the moment I boarded the ship, I was greeted with luxury and comfort
onboard, with French hospitality and spacious cabins exceeding my
expectations. The expedition leaders also impressed me with their extensive
knowledge and passion for wildlife and the environment.
Throughout the expedition, I marveled at the diverse birdlife, breathtaking
landscapes, and geological wonders. Highlights included exploring Ulva
Island, and witnessing the beauty of Dusky Sound and Milford Sound.
Macquarie Island, with its geological significance and abundant wildlife,
left a lasting impression. Despite challenging weather conditions at Campbell
Island, we continued our journey to Antipodes Island, where Zodiac tours
allowed for up-close encounters with fur seals and diverse bird species.
Reflecting on this adventure, I consider it one of the best experiences of my
life. I feel incredibly privileged to have explored these remote and pristine
environments, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to have visited these
rarely accessed islands.
