Postcard from Mexico

Chacahua Ashanti Ramsey Hamilton

In 2021-22 I spent 4 months travelling around Mexico, after what was meant to be a 3 week trip on the way to California! I honestly wasn't prepared for what an incredible time it would be. The vibrancy of the culture, the warmth and love from the people, the stunning change of landscapes and the mouth-watering flavours of the delicacies - all second to none!

An absolute life changing highlight would have to be the two months I spent living on an island, which is a National Park, amongst an Afro Mexican community. The island was one of the most tranquil places I've ever been on earth. There is nothing to do except surf and swim and whatever else you decide to do with your time is entirely up to you! I lived in my hammock for two months right on the water front. I didn't have a phone so truly became in touch with nature, telling the time by the suns position or nights temperature. I would spend my nights playing music with friends, making bonfires, watching the orange moon rise from the ocean and gazing at the incredible clusters of stars illuminating the sky - even once witnessing a meteor shower with hours of endless shooting stars! I would spend my days watching the sun rise from my hammock each morning, surfing and working in a local restaurant on the lagoon where I made tacos and received help from the locals to improve my Spanish.
