Helen Terry

Lovely to meet you

I am delighted to be back with the House of Travel family in my new role supporting Shelley and the amazing team at the Mount.

When I left New Zealand at age 21 to work at a ski resort in Japan for a year, I had no idea that I wouldn't be back to live for another 16 years! I was hooked on travel from the beginning, so took myself to the UK where I ended up working for Globus Tours as a tour director. I guided tours around England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland, so got to know the United Kingdom really well. Whilst living in the UK I took advantage of the easy proximity to Europe and fed my passion for travel even more. This led to my next position with an airline at Stansted Airport until I finally returned to NZ to live.

I truly believe that travelling is the best education in the world, so once my family came along it didn't stop me; we just took them with us! As a family we have visited Thailand, Northern Territory, Gold Coast and UK/Europe, so I am pleased to say that I have passed on my passion for travel to my children.

I feel privileged to be in a position to provide assistance to my colleagues and their clients.

My favourite holiday memories

  • Canada
    Big White Canada

Prior to my visit to Big White, it had been 23 years since I had skied in Japan, but WOW!!....what a fantastic ski resort to rekindle my passion for snow sports. With a three metre base of snow and a huge choice of wide ski runs, there is something for everyone at Big White. The village is covered in snow, so you can just ski straight to your choice of restaurants, cafes or accommodation, kick off your skis and walk straight in. I loved the après-ski options of wine tasting, horse drawn sleigh through the woods for dinner in a log cabin, ice skating, snow tubing and more.

  • Moorea, Tahiti
    Moorea Tahihi

Moorea was the best beach holiday I have ever had! The stunning overwater bungalows offered unobstructed views of the turquoise water that Tahiti is famous for. The highlight of my trip was paddling transparent kayaks over the stunning underwater landscape and swimming with the sharks and rays which reside peacefully on the reefs.

  • Croatia
    Croatia Stocks

What I loved about Croatia was the layers of history evident on every corner, and the amazing combination of Mediterranean and Slavic food. The cities of Split and Dubrovnik are steeped in history, guaranteeing that you can lose yourself in tiny lanes - maybe even find some historic treasures like an ancient guillotine in a tiny garden! It was incredible to be walking through Diocletian's Palace in Split where today's local shopkeepers use Roman foundations to display their wares. The combination of this history and the blue waters of the Adriatic put Croatia as number one of my favourite European destinations.

  • Cruising to Sydney
    Cunard Cruise

You couldn't get an easier holiday than a cruise. What I love most about cruising is the huge variety of cruise styles to suit every traveller, whether you be an adventure junkie, want time to share with family or friends, need to be spoilt with luxury, or want to explore a huge area like Europe but not have to change hotels every day.

I have cruised on P&O with a group of friends for a fun filled long weekend, on Cunard for a touch of luxury and class, and with Princess Cruises to explore the coast of Tasmania. I would love for my next cruise experience to be on an expedition ship, exploring a difficult to reach area, like Alaska or the Kimberley in Australia.

  • Thailand
Elephant Hills Rainforest Camp Helen Terry

Taking kids to Thailand to push them out of their comfort zone is something I highly recommend to any family. Starting in Phuket, we made our way to Elephant Hills, where we stayed in permanent tented accommodation, visited an elephant sanctuary, took a river cruise, and spent a night on a floating tent in Khao Sok National Park. We kayaked and swam in the lake, climbed a mountain and entered a cave with all sorts of  “creepy stuff” and ate amazing Thai food in the middle of the lake. The kids came home with a new found confidence and a desire to travel again.

My travel passions

I have a passion for cruising of all kinds. As a qualified CLIA cruise master, I can find a cruise to suit everyone.
Through my passion for snow skiing, I have sent many families on amazing winter holidays around the world, creating life long memories of adventures in the snow.

When I travel I like to push myself out of my comfort zone. This could be by "roughing it" in remote accommodation, kayaking so my body hurts, climbing a mountain that makes me puff, eating food that I have never tried before, attempting a few words in a new language, or travelling on public transport to see where it will take me. No matter what it is, I emerge from this experience having learned something about my destination and myself. This is what makes travel my passion and these experiences are what I love to share.

Travelling in UK and Europe can seem daunting for someone who hasn't been there before, so my personal experiences can be invaluable for those that want to find something out of the ordinary.
